NYT Games is a puzzle game collection by New York Times Company, released in 2009, and is currently is generating over $200K in daily IAP revenue, even peaking above $600K per day at the end of August, according to AppMagic.

Let’s take a look at what kind of design this follows.
Familiar Puzzles
At first glance, this feels more like an app featuring a collection of minigames than a fully fledged game. These minigames are, in fact, familiar puzzle formats ranging from Crosswords and Wordle to Spelling Bee, Connections, and more.
Daily Routine
Unlike traditional games, this doesn’t feature any meta gameplays or LiveOps events. Instead, it builds retention around a daily habit. Every player gets the same new puzzles every day, turning what would normally be a single-player experience into something surprisingly social. Players can discuss answers, compare results, share scores, and these interactions even extend to online forums, blogs etc. Additionally, features like archives let subscribers go back and play older challenges, while leaderboards, friend systems, badges, and stat tracking give players a sense of longer-term progression built around these daily habits
Subscriber-Focused Monetization
The app does feature ads, but they are relatively limited to banners appearing before entering some games. The main monetization driver is subscriptions, and there are two primary tiers: one focused on Games, providing access to full collection, archives, and even creation modes, while the other bundles Games with broader New York Times content. Additionally, Crosswords feature puzzle packs that players can purchase separately, creating another monetization opportunity, while discounted sales further help conversions.
With more and more puzzle collection games entering the market, will any of them be able to challenge NYT Games? Time will tell.
