Vita Mahjong is a Mahjong Solitaire game by Vita Studio, released in January 2024, and it is currently receiving 250K+ daily downloads, according to AppMagic.

Let’s explore the design strategies behind the success of this game.
Smooth FTUE
The game offers a short, straightforward tutorial that introduces the core mechanics without overwhelming the player. Right after the basics, players are dragged into more challenging levels, gradually increasing the difficulty to maintain engagement. Early-stage levels are also ad-free, providing an uninterrupted gameplay experience. Additionally, players receive immediate feedback on their actions and can personalize the game with different tile styles and backgrounds right from the start enhancing user agency and comfort.
Immersive Design
The visuals are calming, the sounds are satisfying, and the gameplay feels like a simplified version of real Mahjong, where players must match same types of “open” tiles—those not blocked on the left, right, or top. As the game has no time constraints, players also get to enjoy each level at their own pace. But it’s not just about matching—players must think strategically to avoid getting stuck. And for the players who got stuck the game features boosters, which not only reduce potential frustration but also create opportunities for monetization.
Simple Monetization
Banners and interstitial ads are only introduced after Level 10, ensuring that new players aren’t overwhelmed early on. However, RV ads are available from the beginning, giving players the option to earn boosters through voluntary engagement. The only IAP available in the game is an ad removal offer and it is also hidden in an options menu.
