Where Is the Puzzle Market Heading?

For years, Puzzle market was dominated by three giants: Match-3, Merge & Blast.

They still generate the majority of Puzzle revenue today. But when you look at where the market is heading, the story is very different.

And AppMagic captures this shift clearly in their latest article.

Over the last decade:
● Match-3, Merge, and Blast have fallen from 95% → 80% of Puzzle IAP revenue
● Their share of Puzzle downloads has dropped even more dramatically. From 75%+ to below 25%

So where is that attention going?
Increasingly toward hybrid casual puzzle genres.

Within hybrid casual puzzles, three categories in particular have been gaining momentum.

Sort Puzzle
From Water Sort to Block Jam 3D, Hexa Sort, Magic Sort, and Pixel Flow, the genre continues to find new design spaces instead of competing with itself.

Block Puzzle
Evolving beyond endless Tetris-inspired gameplay into level-based experiences like Color Block Jam, with a healthy mix of IAP and ad monetization.

Screw Puzzle
Still the youngest of the three, but titles like Screw Jam and Screwdom have already shown how much commercial potential the mechanic has.

One thing these genres have in common is that most are built as hybrid casual games.

That means their IAP revenue only tells part of the story. Many successful titles generate substantial ad revenue as well, making these businesses significantly larger than IAP charts alone suggest.

The biggest takeaway?
The Puzzle market isn’t replacing Match-3 or Merge overnight. Instead, it’s becoming far more diversified, with new mechanics carving out meaningful businesses alongside the traditional giants.

It’ll be fascinating to see which puzzle mechanic becomes the next breakout subgenre.
